You will note the "AMC" (American Motors Corp) stamped next to the "231" and "87" for the build date. Some interesting info can be found here: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge...er-cases/np231

If you open the driver door and check tag for build date. anything 6/87 will be a 88 model. Model year change over happens mid year.

I didn’t mean to imply that you should sell this Cherokee. If it has only has 45,000 miles on it this has to be one of the lowest mile 80’s Cherokee’s out there to trade hands recently. Looks like it has a manual transmission which is more unusual. My son and I keep an eye out for great ones like this but they are few and far between. It is a keeper for sure. I am hoping that you decide to keep it mostly stock since it is so rare to find one that’s original with low miles. It’s yours to do as you please but doing mods that are reversible would be the best for future value. I get it about being a limited market located in Alaska but even then with some maintenance and refreshing it is easily worth $6k. (BTW, I drove through your area in September on the way to Wrangell-St. Elias NP and Slana area, then Denali – astoundingly beautiful country!)
I am curious if you received any info on the history of the vehicle when you acquired it. It seems likely it set for a long time without being driven and I assume no recent maintenance had been done before you got it. If you have not already started this I recommend changing all fluids very soon as most are likely original from 1987. Items to address beyond engine oil, along with my recommendation for fluid type, include: front and rear differential (75W90 synthetic); transfer case AFT or ATF+4); brake fluid flush at all four corners (DOT 3&4 such as Valvoline); clutch master cylinder (same as brake fluid); power steering (PS fluid to Chrysler spec 5931), manual transmission (10W-30), cooling system antifreeze (Zerex Original, any ITA type or a “all vehicle” type, 60% antifreeze, 40% distilled water). You will likely find some cooling system hoses, brake lines and brake hoses that need replacing. I would look carefully at front and rear brakes also as some parts may have rusted in place such that they are not effective.
I will be picking up a ’91 soon and already have obtained parts such as cooling system hoses and have a “to do” list. If you want any suggestions, part numbers, etc I can provide info.

Third Coast ;
I did think about selling it but I am loving it too much. I feel like a kid again with my old truck from high school. worth every penny !
Basic maintenance was done per auction requirements. I mounted studded tires, brakes are good for now. the first thing I am going to do is install an internal roll bar and better seats/restraints. then I need a roof rack and mount some of them extremely bright LED light bars on it. right now sun comes up at 10 and goes down at 4, very dark. A plunger switch for lights mounted on the shifter like the blower switch on Road Worrier should work. Then i will think about doing the drive lines lift kit and tires. ohh and a radio, still has stock AM only radio. To change stations I must wait till heater warms up the radio.
lets see what else did you ask, one owner from new, bought at a dealer in Anchorage that is not open anymore or changed names. it was missing the jack and floor mats but did have original manual in glove box with original owners name in it.
"Astoundingly beautiful country" yes it is ! moved up from Arizona 2 years ago landed in Palmer, then 2 months ago I bought a property in Willow around the dog mushers. never been more happy in my life.

Wow, that's a really nice truck. That's the thing about nice XJ's, they are really hard to find in good shape. You have to find the balance of modifications to originality. But then again, if you are going to keep it forever, make it yours. (Just try not to beat the hell out of it).
P.S., nice ford Ranger in the back.
