barn find in Alaska

hello I am new on here and just bought a Cherokee but not new to jeeps. My first truck at 18 was a brand new 1988 Comanche 2wd 4 cyl strip model. Now at 50 I just bought a 1987 Cherokee with only 45,000 miles in great shape all original totaly stock. its a jeep when they still where jeep be for Chrysler bought out Jeep Eagle. found it at an auction in Wasilla Alaska 2 weeks ago for 2 grand.

Really Nice!

$2k is an absolute steal, especially in AK.

I will be doing a lift, wheels and tires maybe some camo. this is the reason I posted on this forum, to get the info needed. like what lift kit to buy and any week spots to look for.

nice find. very clean for the year.

i like the user name. you gonna put that on your plates, just like milner's coupe? i know i would.

what lift/tire size you wanna go with?

thx#1138 11-25-2018 02:08 PM

I know it was on the yellow coupe but I use it because of the movie called THX-1138 Lucas made in 1971. and I already checked its taken. so I will be going with IB6UB9 will see if I can get that one to go through.

anyway I want to go with 4 inch lift but there are some issues with needing to change the slip yoke ? whats the story with that ? as far as tires I dont want to go any bigger than 31 because I will be driving it a lot of miles and I got it for gas mileage.

so who makes the best lift ?

That is the most painful question on this forum.

If you want a simple, high quality, and reasonably priced lift:

Otherwise get ready for hours and hours worth of research.

You need a slip yoke eliminator kit as well as a rear driveshaft.
You will have to figure out which transfer case you have, and go from there

thx#1138 11-25-2018 08:16 PM

is there a trend talking about transfer case identification ?

craigjacob1 11-25-2018 08:39 PM

There is also a tag on the back of the transfer case.
It will also be helpful to note whether or not you have the old or new style case

There typically is a round metal tag attached to the rear facing side of the transfer case. However, with yours being older it may be different. If it is there it will be easy to see.

You have a good find there. Congratulations! Stock Cherokees with low miles and in good condition are becoming rare and are demanding higher and higher prices. Those that are in excellent original, stock condition are starting to show up at collector type auctions and are getting the highest prices. Sale prices of more than $10k are occurring. As you evaluate modifications and upgrades consider that you may have something very special as it exists in original condition. If you go to sell it the closer it is to original the more you will likely get for it. Yes, there are some nicely modified XJ’s demanding high prices also but they come with considerable investment. As an example there is a company in Virginia that will professionally restore and mod a XJ beginning at around $10k and going up to more than $20k and that is just for the upgrades, not the vehicle. A moderate lift should not be an issue but radical mods not done with care will likely reduce the value over the long term. Just my opinion, but maybe something to think about.

I did think about that but I am in Alaska and moving it to the lower 48 will cost over a grand in fuel to drive, auto transport would be more. the other problem is the friend who punted it to me with only 100 dolor mark up would not be my friend if he finds out I made a bunch of money on it and not driving it anymore. I had first dibbs on it, he said two other people wanted it but he called me about it after the viewing the day be for the auction. then there is the other problem , I like it,my first car was a brand new 88 Comanche, i beat the everloving **** out of that truck and it never let me down, so I am not letting this one go ! its very special to me !
