Also when i do get this fixed, when shifting from 4hi to 4lo or to 2 hi, how should the jeep me moving? rolling? stationary? in Drive? in park? Just want to make sure I'm doin things right.

Clearly I'm new to the whole jeep/4wd thing. But i want to learn and am loving the jeep.
You should be able to fix/fab the linkage. As far as the t-case goes, wait and see. It may be fine or may have shortened the life of the t-case or...... time will tell.

From 2wd to 4hi can be done "on the fly" though if the conditions warrant 4hi you probably shouldn't be going all that fast.

When shifting into 4lo you have to be at a stop or just barely rolling. I usually have the trans in Neutral (actually clutch pressed on mine as it is a manual) but do not know if that is "required".

Coming out of 4hi can be tricky sometimes, it may not want to disengage. Some find it works better to back up a bit when disengaging 4wd, I usually slam it into 2wd while rolling and if that doesn't work I will stop and put it in 4lo then go all the way to 2wd without stopping and that typically gets it done.
