The last month or two my brakes have squeeled and the brake pedal pulsed and felt soft.
I got furloughed with the gov't shutdown (Vote out all the democrats) so I've been doing maintenance on the XJ.
I changed the front brakes and the front rotors were really scored bad.
I went to do the back brakes and they looked like they were installed yesterday. No visible wear.
I bled the brakes but no change in stopping or feel.
I then took off the o-ring from the piston in the proprtion valve and bled the brakes again.
Holy stopping power Bat Man! Significant change for the better. I would guess my stopping distance is now half of what it was.
I'll have to get around to doing the brake booster upgrade and really experience some stopping power.
Cheers,
Jason
Sorry about the loss of your job. What a crock of **** in Washington.

Installing the "guts" of a 94 to 98 ZJ prop valve into your 89's prop valve will really help on a disc conversion also.

Thanks Cruiser. Are the internal parts for the prop valve sold anywhere, or do I have to find the whole unit at the junk yard?

Get the guts at the JY. Requires a 3/4" wrench/socket. Be careful. They're somewhat spring loaded.

This is the "guts" you need from the proportioning valve.

The silver one is from a I-6 & the red one is from a V-8.

Big David,
Is the piston different or is the spring tension different?

I've been hoping I could just order the guts somewhere but can't find it. I think the whole manifold has to be purchased.

Can't you just use the proportioning valve from a ZJ? Why just the guts? Aren't they the same with the exception that the guts from the ZJ allow more fluid?

Sure you can. If you want to screw around with 4 possibly rusted brake line fittings, wrestling it into place, and getting the lines started, bleeding the complete system. Go for it.

But why? One plug removed from the prop valve and swap the guts. Your choice.

Wow....didn't realize I'd get so much attitude for a simple question. Thanks for the info but not the tone it was delivered in.

You think I would have asked if I knew these facts? Not everyone is born with a lifetime of knowledge as you seem to have been. And really dude? Big boy pants? That's pretty childish if you ask me. And as for this this little squabble, I'm done.

Asking is fine. Reading attitude that is not, and was not intended into my answer is nuts.

I think you're being too sensitive.

Your right. If no attitude was intended, then I apologize. It was the way your answer was delivered that led me to believe there was. Either way, I do appreciate the facts. Saves me a lot of headache for when I do my conversation.
