Default will a WJ power steering cooler work as a trans cooler?

I visited the junkyard today and found a '04 WJ with, what I thought at the time was, a trans cooler. when I was done unbolting it, yellow'ish fluid started pouring out so I checked again and it turned out to be a power steering fluid cooler, while the real trans cooler was much bigger, almost as big as the radiator (looked way too big for the XJ).

so I still bought it, they charged me 2 bucks for it so I thought why not get it anyway. so my question is, once I clean it thoroughly can I run it as a transmission cooler or not? to me it should work, but I want to make sure.

Here it is, I didn't measure but it's about 10x8".

Good score. That looks like a stacked plate cooler, which is more efficient than a tube and fin design. Clean it out well, get the proper fittings and it should work great.

It will work fine as a trans cooler once cleaned out.

Get a mild solvent an fill the cooler an let it sit for a while, then spray out with water. Repeat until the water runs clean.

I have an 04 WJ 4.7HO with towing pkg. it has all the same coolers but the trans cooler is a lot larger than the steering and a different design.

I have aftermarket trans coolers on my XJ and several other things I own and have bought and added them for many years. They are designed different for that purpose and for the small amount of money involved I would use a true trans cooler if you think your app really needs one.

They make a cooler flush kit. Hook it up and get it done. Sweet score.

Yeah once I noticed the real tranny cooler I thought no way I can fit that in the XJ. The power steering cooler seemed to look a lot like the Supercooler I see linked.

thanks for the input. right now I don't have a purpose for it, I got it mostly because it was so cheap and looked in decent condition. if I need the XJ for a long trip with hot temperatures, I'll probably go about swapping it for one truly designed for it. I'll have all the lines ready, only need to hook it up. until then, I'll give this one a shot.
