Ok, so I just got this donor jeep to convert to mine to 4wd, I checked the vin and found out it was a 2.5 auto originally. It's a 4.0 manual now. How can I ID the trans and transfer case so I can get the right parts? It's part time 4wd. I thinks it's an ax15 but want to be sure.

That tag on the rear of the transfer case (that aluminum circular thing) will tell you what TC it is. Clean it off and have a look

Judging by the tailcone, it looks like a 242 though

Pretty sure the spline counts are different between the 2.5 and 4.0...

Should be an AX15

Let's see a closeup of that plate in the middle of the transmission. The AX-5 and AX-15 looks almost identical, save for a cast iron midplate. AX-15s are all aluminum. (http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/ax5.htm)

Most 2.5Ls came with AX-5s. Bolt pattern is different. It's very possible whoever at that parts yard mislabelled the transmission.

I sure hope that you didn't pay $850 for that tranny and T/C. If it was junkyard, I wouldn't pay $850 for the whole Jeep. When my last XJ got totaled, the insurance company sold me the whole thing for $150 (what they said they were going to get for scrap) and they delivered it to my house.

Standard on older NP231s before they switched to the greasable slip yoke in '96

That case is identical to the one My 87 XJ had.
It had a BA10 5 speed with the NP231 and vacuum actuated D30.

Does the tranny look like it can be split in half long ways?

haha, no I got the whole jeep for $300 and got a few goodies with it. 3" lift, short arm kit, adjustable trackbar, swaybar discos, rock sliders. no jeepingdan, looks like a standard front/back split w/ a center plate, non-magnetic so I think it must be the ax15 going by salad's reply. according to the vin, the 4.0 and tran were swaped into the jeep at some point. stock was a 2.5l automatic.
