Default Transfer case help

So I'm a newb to the forums and xjs but no newb to vehicles. Just bought my 1996 xj about 2 months ago and I have been selling toys and stuff to rack up parts. Anyway I bought it with a 4.5 lift of crap. It was a 2.5 lift I think and they shoved blocks in for more. We'll seeing the control arm bushings and track bar are shot out I'm just replacing it all with a 6.5 long arm, sye, cv drive shaft. Trying to purchase now. But, confused on transfer cases....I do not have selec trac lever or panel but on my transfer case it's a 242 j?? The linkage will not reach to the lever also. Just wondering if they made one without selec trac or some one threw this in there not knowing? Only 100k on the jeep. Should I get a 231 and trash the 242 or is it not as bad as everyone is saying. Sorry for ranting. Thanks for the help

Get a 231. More aftermarket support.

Will any 231 fit?? So if I don't have the part time /full time lever on console and the linkage don't reach...then more than likely came with a 231?? What do I need to lookout for ?Spline counts/electrical/vacuum connections. Also what about shaft lengths?? I plan on a sye just trying to figure this out... Thanks also does anyone have a 231 case laying around?? I need to figure this out

231s prior to 91 are 21 spline and 91 and later are 23 spline. The YJ and TJ versions are clocked a little different and the ZJ and WJ versions use different spline lengths. Just find one out of an XJ and you should be good. The 242s aren't bad just don't quite the aftermarket support. The shifter is the same just the bezel is different.

You have 3 pull a parts in Atlanta that sell them cheap. Or get on GATR (Georgia Trail Riders) forum and I'm sure half a dozen people have them. Southern Jeeps is another option in North GA. I'm just a little North of you in Chattanooga so I know a lot of folks in those clubs.
