Trans swap question
Hello, I know this question has been asked a million times, but I have a couple specific questions. I have a 1998 Cherokee, 4.0 4x4 auto and I'm wanting to put a 5speed in it. I have a complete 1990 Cherokee, 4.0 5speed 4x4 with motor problems. I'm wondering will the trans, transfer case, driveshaft, linkage, pedals, etc.. from the 1990 bolt up and work in the 1998? I know the 1990 has internal slave cylinder and that's not preferred, but I have the perfect donor jeep to do the swap, if it will work? Thanks in advance!
I was under the impression that the trans and transfer case would work, and I'd have to get a computer for an obd2 5 speed Cherokee. There's really no wiring on the manual trans and transfer case right?

It can be done ,Im running a nv 3550 set up out a 2000 tj. Making sure you have a Ax15 tranny in the 1990 would be a plus. As for electrial reverse lights and speedo all there is. Another area of concern is pilot bearing fitment.

It's a 1990 model cherokee that I'd be using the tranny out of. If it's not an ax15 can it still be used? I have a new clutch kit and slave cylinder, and the 1990 cherokee to pick parts off of. Thanks.

Yes it can be used. Ax15 or better would be a preferred set up. Also look into sourcing a stick shift ecm to avoid check engine light issues. Also getting pedal setup from 97 and up as 96 and down will be different.

According to Wikipedia
1987–Mid-1989: Peugeot BA-10/5 five-speed manual used with 4.0 L I6, 21 spline output. After that ax-15.
1990 is kinda close so you might want to be careful as the BA-10/5 is a real POS. My understanding is the changeover started mid 89.
I did this conversion putting a manual driveline from a 94 into an 89 auto XJ. I swapped the 94 motor along with it so the pilot was not an issue but likely will be for you. The pedals and slave bolted right up for me but I would take freedgr advice as the pedals are enough of a pain to start with.
