For a given load, any steel bolt (grade 8 and grade 5 or grade anything) will stretch the same amount, up to its yield strength (also known as its elastic limit). Remove the load, and it "unstretches" back to its original length, i.e. there will be no permanent stretch (like a spring). For a grade 8 bolt, this load (and corresponding stretch) is greater than a lower grade.

Above the yield strength, the stretch increases dramatically with very small increases in load, until the ultimate load is reached. Again, the ultimate load is higher for a grade 8 bolt than it is for a grade 5. Furthermore, if you stretch a bolt beyond its yield limit, it will not return to its original length (like a spring you've stretched out of shape).

Softer steels will stretch more than harder ones before they break, but the actual load at the break point will still be much lower for the soft steel.

I used tension examples, but shear behaves in much the same way.

I got the JCR Pre-Runner. I love the bumper. It looks great, it is tight to the body. I think it even cleared the front making the appraoch angle better. The reciever will allow me to use a multi-mount winch cradle when I get that point with my Jeep.

I'll play. Here are two winch bumpers that I build. Tight as I can get them without going behind the support.

Here is a the bumper on the front of my XJ... it was copied off of?

Here is a rigid co FBW with some other tubes added.

If you search on ebay for Ground Pounder Fab, he makes all the brackets needed to build a front bumper. He also will cut it out of the thickness you want.

My plans is to do a behind the front crossmember winch mount... so I had hium make mine out of 3/8 with 1/4 side plates

Smile Make ur own Bumper Plans Please

Hi,
To every one who has made their own bumper great well done.
But I live in the UK shipping a bumper over here is just far to much wonga and I'm broke.
But I was wondering if any of the people who had built their own would make their plans and any drawings available to the rest of us.
Why reinvent the wheel if you get my drift.
I for one would be gratefull.
Or is there plans for bumpers on the net all ready?
If yes please can someone give us the link?

Thanks in advance.

It is a Rugged Ridge Isolator, got it from Amazon. Cheapest option I found and works great.

Most people will make this out of carboard, cut & taped together. then pull the template apart & cut it all out of whatever guage steel you plan to run.

pulled out of here... https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f58/my...-bumper-70232/

Awesome bumpers so far guys! Keep em coming

Built this one a LONG time ago.

I'll be making this one here shortly to put the winch behind the x-member and narrowing the front.

How far past the front of the unibody is the farthest forward point of the grill? Another half inch?

I assume these dimensions have worked out and are known to be correct?

Couldn't tell ya for certain. I'd recommend making a template first then, cut off of that!
