Thanks! I used JCR tie in brackets, 1/4" plate bolted and welded to the tie ins, 3/16's plate for the rest. Tools used were an angle grinder, chop saw, Miller MIG, and an orbital sander. The shackle tabs were made out of a solid piece of 1" think steel and drilled out with a frickin huge drill press. Click the bumper build link in my sig to read the whole build.

Ok I'll play.
I did not intend to have a winch on this till recently.
This is tied in to the steering box.
The whole thing is made of 11G steel and has a lot of bracing inside for strength.
Made a winch plate from angle steel welded to bumper and then added plates around it for the extra umph lol
I put the winch as far into the nose as possible for approach angle.
This bumper has been a battering ram and has held up nice. I've maxed out the winch power to test it and it did not move a micrometer.

One more thing I need to add protection for the winch so I'm looking to make a runner bar soon.

I like seeing these bumpers and all (very nice everyone!) but should there maybe be some tech discussion on mounting points, bracing, and whatever strong points of interest should be mentioned as far as a potential buyer or fabricator should be aware/concerned of?

Me for instance, I know nothing about building bumpers or 100% of what makes a good bumper a good bumper from the herd. I've read a lot of things but I'm sure I don't really understand all of it, and considering there's a range of people from seasoned pros to essentially kids looking for their first rides on here, I just feel it would be beneficial.

Again there's been some pretty sweet bumpers up so far! Carry on lol.

Agreed. My two cents on it. Run your main brackets back far enough to get a two for one as far as beefing up your steering gear box, your already adding the steel, might as well make it so your gear box bolts go through your bumper bracket to strengthen the unibody, my designs a little flawed as I did'nt think it through and only two of the three do this, but it still helps a little.
The only other things I could think to add is, if attaching tow points to it, make sure they line up or better yet attach right to the brackets to the unibody so you get a straight pull in line with the body.
I also would'nt go less than five grade 8 fasteners per side, especially if you plan to use it for a winch or recovery point.
I'm not an expert by any means, these are just things I learned doing some homework and from the guy (way smarter than I) that helped me build mine. HTH.

So I have a question... as well as a bumper lol

As I was told..... Grade 8 can hold a clamped force better then a grade 5, but a grade 5 has a higher shear rating then a grade 8? so wouldn't you want grade 5's for the bumper bolts? what thickness of bolt should be used? I know it really wont matter unless your winching/dead pulling on it but would like to know. is this correct or am I mislead?

onto my bumper... It was home made, but not by me. have 3/16'ths plates that go pretty far back and brace to box as well. It his held on with the 3 steering box bolts (grade 8) used hte stock steering box bolts to hold the other side plate on. there are also 2 3/4" grade 5 bolts in the farthest back hole. and 8 grade 5 5/8" bolts holding the bumper to the plates. (which is why i am interested in this bolt theory) ok enough blah blah onto picks...

Used these plates to install it (left) (on the right is the jcr box spacer)

Just need to get my which...

We need to swap those out for all grade 8s!

grade 5 for a bumper bolt is plenty strong. getting into a grade 5 vs 8 debate is like the DOM vs HREW debate.

basically if you don't torque a grade 8 properly(any size) then you just weekend it. grade 8 can be stretched easily if over tightened(which is usually what happens when people put them in), where grade 5's once they stretch their set.

if you really want an interesting bolt lesson i'll see if i can have my buddy can learn ya. he had to take a 5 hour bolt class for his work(kennecott) and the booklets and info he got was surprising. just like when i learned the differences between DOM an HREW.
