in refrence to the " play in front axle connecting to front dif" are you referring to the axle tube where it connects to the front diff housing? Got any pics?

A better description of this "thump" would help your cause (a better description of the whole
Issue) and a better description of the part in question as already stated would help Your cause as well, help us help you lol.

I further second the notion of the hypothesis' of my colleague's inference on your situation requiring further illumination of the problem at hand.

I'm not familiar with working on or diagnosing pinions... but from the sounds of it you have a bad bearing in there that needs to be replaced before further damage is engaged.

You might need a new pinion already as it is. Next week I'm flying home and I'm having new gears put in my axles. You can have mine for the cost of shipping if it turns out you need them.

I have a 98 XJ with the high pinion dana 30 and 3.55 gearing (ring and pinion). I can toss in my bearings and everything else if you want. They're all fine.

x2 It sounds like something in your front diff is messed up pretty bad. my advice when it comes to gear stuff is, unless you have experience with them, to leave that work to professionals. Gears need to be set up properly or you will just continue to have pretty bad problems. Its hard to tell what is actually causing the problem without opening up the diff and looking at it. Could be broken teeth, a bad pinion bearing, things like that. Either way it will have to be taken apart overhauled/ replaced and the gears will need to be re set up.

I'm at zip-code 32134.

Until I get home I won't know what's going to be taking place. I'm hoping I can get my axles into a shop to be worked on while I'm home. I have a lot of stuff I need to do.

One of which is buy another XJ.
