Installed SYE, New Driveshaft, New Major Vibration When Not on the Pedal
Trying to see if this is normal. I had a SYE installed with new driveshaft to cure some minor vibration I was experiencing at high speeds (above 65).
Now the minor vibration seems to be gone, but, if I'm going 60MPH or above, and I decide to shift, push the clutch in, go into neutral, or just take my foot off the gas pedal to cruise, my Cherokee vibrates like crazy. It's almost like I'm going across a grated street perpendicular. It does this for a few seconds and then goes away.
What is that? I'm told this could be normal, since the pinion goes from pointing up to down when I take my foot off the pedal.
Is this common?
Seeking feedback.
Cheers!

I'm working out my own vibration issues. I experience vibration at 40-50 mph after changing out rear spring leafs. So far I have changed out my u-joints. I have to say that it helped, but didn't fix it. Next thing I am going to buy an angle finder and check angles at my t-case yoke and axle yoke. check out june JPmagazine for a really great article on how to set up drive shaft angles.
If you switched out to a CV shaft when you changed to SYE, then you will have a major angle change in your rear article, something I learned because I read that article.

What kind of SYE did you do. Did you open the TC or was it a HnT.
can u post a picture of where your drive shaft meets with the rear axle, it would be a good idea to let us see the angle.
also how are your tires, alignment.... and so on.

I've attached a few photos. Two of the rear. I took one of the front if you want to see that too.
Let me know if that helps.

Pinion angle looks good.
Did you do anything else beside the SYE and DS?
Sounds like something is loose....I'll check the u-bolts, shackle bolts as well as leaf spring bolts.
Make sure they are torque to spec WITH wheels on the ground.
Oh, also make sure the Ujoints are seated correctly like this.

I'll check.
I had my girlfriend in the jeep last night to see what she thought and it turns out that the vibration I'm feeling felt exaggerated because I have my hand on the stick and pedals, which really feel the vibration.
She claims she couldn't feel it, but noticed the noise for sure. It's loud, whatever is happening underneath, and it does sound like it's coming from closer to the front than the rear, but hard to say.
I'll look at TC today.
Cheers

Look at your torque converter bolts and see if there lose. Another item to check is your harmonic balancer, motor mounts, and trans mount this will also give you a vibration.

Thanks, I'll have those checked.
I'm told I probably need a 4 degree shim on the rear axle.
Cheers

You didn't take apart your drive shaft slip yoke did you? The joints need to remain in phase. It looks kinda tight up around your output yoke, are there any clearance issues there? Any signs of metal-to-metal contact?
I can't imagine there's that much movement in your axle from gas on to gas off. It'll move, but shouldn't be that much.
