Default rotating thump in rear

Have a strange problem on my 2000 Cherokee Sport (4.0 l., 4x4, factory rear, pretty much stock). Whenever I come to a rolling stop, I hear a thumping sound from what seems to be the rear. It only makes this sound when gently breaking and only sounds as if it is rotating (rhythemic thump.....thump.....thump.....) It won't do it during a hard break. I had the rear drums and pads replaced and it somewhat subsided. Then I got sideswiped in the rear and had them replaced again. The sound went away for almost 9 months, but know it has returned. The local mechanics can't figure it out either. Any ideas of what this might be?

Thanx

Does you brake pedal throb or pulsate when baking. Almost sounds like an out of round brake drum or warped rotor?

My '99 has the same problem. There is/was a recall for it at one time. The problem is the centers of the axle shafts are slightly SMALLER than the holes on the drums causing the drums to move and "knock" the axle shafts during soft braking. It was a common problem on old AMC cars too. I have seen many AMC Spirits and Concords with a few extra bolts added to bolt the drums to the axle flanges. It's kinda wonky, but it works.

I don't drive my '99 in the winter, so my rear didn't clunk for about the first 10 minutes of driving this spring as the drums were rusted to the flanges. Once the drums busted loose, it started thunking on soft stops.

WHEE!!

I just did the rear brakes on a friends Saturn LS200 and they have a small screw that threads through the drum and into the flange.
