I really like this idea BUT I hear alot of complaints about the noise AND it seems to me that as hot as these get under the hood routing across the engine is going to make it even hotter than a normal intake that doesn't run across the top of the engine compartment.
Isn't there anywhere on the sides or in front of the engine compartment to get REAL outside cooler air from?
Just curious what others think, this has been bothering me.....
Most people make there own cowl cold air intake using PVC mostly and for a snorkel also as its up high. Check out www.bleepinjeep.com for details on making one.
the air in the cowl is colder than what any other intake available for an xj would draw in if your worried about noise stick with your stock airbox any modifications make noise

The noise is only loud when you put your foot into it. While just driving you can hardly hear it. As for heat I thought the same before I got mine, it is cool to the touch when I open my hood and feel it. It seems to cool its self from the air its sucking from the cowl. I like mine very much, Here is a vid of mine so you can kinda get a idea of how they sound.
I love mine. Initally the noise can be LOUD. but it wears in well. Yes the air goes over the engine but also think its cleaner air without the drag/notability of a snorkel... ie, someone won't be like OH WOW HE HAS A SNORKEL LETS STEAL IT
It was super easy to do and you'll enjoy it greatly. though be cautious with the stock stuff they give you to seal the boot. i've had some issues with that and had to think outside the box a little but i'd never run an XJ without it.
