Default Headliner Materials

Hey Jeepers,

When I bought my XJ the headliner was beginning to sag in spots. After off-roading with the doors off, the added weight of the mud splatter and water pulled it down to the point I had to peel the fabric off.

I am reluctant to replace it with similar absorbent material like stock. I would like to have a vinyl or plastic-like material that I could wipe clean with a damp towel. Something more like what they used in the muscle-car era. It's hard to find anything with the foam backing. I don't want to use anything porous and have glue seeping through.

Ideally I would like black/grey digital camo, but I would be more than happy with just black. All I'm seeing online is that grey t-shirt like material. Does anyone know where I can find something like this?

I went to an upholstery shop and had a stock/color/type headliner installed for just over a $100. They asked if I wanted something different and had loads of samples to look at, you might check a local shop and see.

I just did mine myself. The best advice I can give is if you go with a foam backed fabric, but TWO cans of headliner glue. I bought ONE (it is expensive-approx $20 a can for the dedicated headliner glue) and JUST had enough, barely.

Some folks just spray paint/ bed line the fiber board with pretty good results.

I just did mine. I used a foam backed headliner material and two cans of Dap Weldwood High Strength Adhesive. Don't be stingy with the glue. I also glued a role of EZ Cool insulation to the underside of the roof. Keeps things cool and quiet.

Eh I hate paying somebody to do something that I can do myself.

Yea I've seen pictures of what happens when you don't use material with the foam backing.

Not a fan of that. I like a more finished look.

I used vinyl from JC Whitney. Also supplied by Heads Up Industries and can likely be found at a large fabric store as well.

When its only a few bucks more to have it done by a pro its a no brainer for me, not worth my time for $20 or so plus all the labor.

Just a note: do not buy the cheaper locktite brand spray adhesive. It has very fine print not for use on headliners. Ask me how I know...

I used come Mossy Oak fabric for my headliner and trim pieces from JoAnns fabric store, and as mentioned above, spend the money on the good glue.
