In a semi-truck yes. It's so they can cycle through the gears while taking advantage of mostly mid to higher rpm's at faster speeds, such as a freeway on-ramp. This gives them the high torque and a fully spooled turbo at their pedal to get up to freeway speeds. They certainly dont need a turbo for top-end speed. I'm assuming jeeps wouldn't either. Aim for high torque, and what's most effective in a 3 geared +od automatic or a 5 speed in my opinion is plain ol block size and forced induction

Agreed.....

I haven't driven a Semi, but I have driven a wrecker, turbo diesel, 12 gears, I could start in 3'rd with no load, 2nd with a honda, and needed to use 1'st with a full size or larger.

That being said, with a heavy load, there is ALOT of fast shifting to get through all of the gears, keeping the high rpm's for the fast acceleration. 90% of the time you only use half of the gears. But he is right about the high rpm's. Next time you come to a stop light next to a semi, roll down your window and listen.

and.....

List of Parts Needed: may be incomplete

Upgraded fuel pump
Fuel Pressure Reg for Turbo Applications
Possibly a Custom ECU Chip
HY35 @ ~6psi
Water to Air IC
IC Heat Exchanger and Plumbing
2.5" IC Pipes
Hose couplings and T-Clamps
Recirc Valve
Hose for Vacuum/Boost Connections
3-3.5" Exhaust
Exhaust Manifold for Turbo Application
Braided Stainless Oil Lines and Fittings
Oil Pan Fitting for oil Drain
Air Filter
Boost Guage
Wide Band

This is ~$3,000 in parts.
Of course, if you are a diligent scavenger, you may be able to reduce the price above.

My advice is to keep the KISS approach and only purchase what you need. In other words, don't complicate your life with methanol injection, turbo timers, big injectors, etc.. These things will only lead to a light wallet, and a heavy 4.0L paper weight.

People have been turbocharging anything that has pistons, and some things without, for decades. Just do your research and make informed decisions and it will work out in the end.

I suppose farm tractors and low range for that matter are made for high RPMs as well.
