solid axle swap on 91 cherokee
hey i want to switch out my disconect axle on my 91 HO for a solid 44 or 60. how can i do this while keeping my 4 link and im going to put on an 8inch long arm lift kit. I have the np 231 t-case obviously. would i need to switch this. and would a posi lock still work if i didnt. also do i need to change anything if i upgrade to a 44 or 60? Im new to this but i really want to learn how to work on my jeep. Any help or advice is appreciated.

welcome to cherokee forum!
do some searching on pirate4x4.com. there are plenty of good write-ups on installing d60's and d44's. there are a few good ones here, but i have found way more over there. just dont post anything unless you like e-fights and being flamed.
here is a short list of just some of the things you will need to do for the swap.
all new brkts on the axcle for 4-link and coil buckets..including trac bar mount.
new custom steering
new wheels..different lug patterns(better swap out the rear diff to match the front)
prob new tires(if you go dana 60, most wont fit a 15 inch rim over the caliper without grinding a half inch out of it)
the list goes on and on once you start swapping................and it can get REALLY expensive. most of these old diffs that people are swapping in need a full rebuild. i quit doing full width swaps because of this.

If you really want to eliminate that disconnect so bad you can buy a block off plate and remove it. Then just swap in a non disco shaft on the right side.

you will also need to put in a seal next to the carrier, as the location for the disco seal wont work with a 1 piece axle

you don't need to swap the entire axle assembly. just the shafts. and install a new inner seal. shafts and seal can be found cheaply.
but you could just find an assembly and swap it in to also upgrade to the bigger u-joints and keep HP diff. front D30 axles can also be found cheap. I plan on selling mine for a 30 pack of beer. but you need to find one with the correct gear ratio.
write up on it. its not for a XJ, but its the exact same. (swapping shafts)

another thread with good info. may be easier to swap the whole axle depending on your knowledge of rebuilding axles ect... (swapping axles, and which ones have the joints ect..)

yes your transfer case will work.
by posilock you mean diff? posi-track?
or posi-lok like this? Posi-lok
this eliminates the vacuum actuator on the axle, but turns it into a cable. so you still have engaged/disengaged and the weak link of the coupling ect. its better then the vacuum setup, but you cant do this AND the axle swap. no need for both. you eliminate the need for a switching system when you replace the shaft with a 1 piece.
just want to clarify, wouldn't want you to waste some $$$

Yes you can use your 231 case with a single piece axle. That is the setup that most newer XJ's left the factory with.

my main concern is im putting on 8 in lift and want to use sye on 231 t case instead of the trouble with 232. so could i buy a jeep with 232 t case and solid axle like a 92 and swap out t case for the 231 and if i coul how would that work with the gear box having full time position. and by the way this is a project havent started or purchased anything even jeep any ideas or advice welcomed and money not a problem plan to spend 10 to 15k. and know i dont want by one already built i want to learn along the way and have some fun. also anyone in portland or. would love to talk maybe if ur doin some work i could help u for freeeeeeeeeee. just so i could learn.
All XJs already have a solid axle, just look for a jeep with the 231 Tcase, youll have a hard time not finding one. To answer your question if you found one with a 242 Tcase you can swap it out for a 231 as long as its a similar year model because of the input shaft spline count changing in 91 IIRC. May I ask why you are dead set on 8" of lift?
