Mine is kind of hillbilly looking because of the white pvc I used. But its sealed and uses the stock air box. Which is great because if I would ever get any water in it would have to fill the box before it got to the filter.

The passenger side cowl is completely covered(its a fake air dam from factory. The air/water can only come in on the drivers side.
i saw your post on another thread last night the only thing i would have done different is painted it black. I like how yours is done I am not a fan of the flex hose stuff but that is just me no real reason.

I want only either DIY or Made in the USA. I'd get into it further...but some people get too butt hurt over saying one once of criticism or asking detailed questions about products.

I'm debating this mod myself. Seems like a big pita for me. I have ABS and a washer fluid bottle to remove lol. I might as well though gonna loose it when I drop in an 8.8!

Personally, I'm not a fan of snorkels. After being in the HVAC business for a few years I look at it from an airflow perspective. You're adding more of a distance for the air to travel, there's bends in the tube. So to me all I see it doing is limiting your airflow. I've had people argue that because the scoop points forwards it creates a ram air effect. True, but that's only at road speeds. Snorkels are for off roading. Plus with water that deep you'd best be moving the breather tubes for the axles/tranny. That's a pet peeve of mine. There's tons of JK owners around here that got a snorkel because it looks cool. I have yet to find one that's raised the breather tubes. IMO cowl intakes are far better for airflow. Designed properly the lower height vs a snorkel won't matter. Cowl > snorkel any day. But seriously, move your breather tubes.

And get proper outer seals for the axles. Water in the intake is far worse, but water in the diff is more common.

It makes sense to me as an architect who had to work a lot with the mechanical engineers as ductwork was huge but in tight spaces in many of my Verizon CO projects. At times, we really had to do extensive work to get the whole system fit in and blowing hard (giggidy). Amazed me the heat load telephone switching equipment and data centers have.

I wondered if there was a way to do a DIY way to reduce the bends and/or distance to increase airflow. Perhaps a dual system with a valve system to go from efficient highway usage to trail use (at slow speed) and still provide water protection.

You'd have to have some custom molded plastic to be as smooth as possible and even then the opening would face backwards. Unless it could rotate to face either way.

I run a snorkel with a prefilter on the top and I love it. I have no intentions of ever getting into any water even near that deep but it still works as a cold air intake and with the prefilter anytime im on a dusty road it picks up the big stuff before it even gets to my paper filter.
