I have a safari snorkel, I put mine on not for water but for dust, I've been on trails where the dust was so dry like baby powder that it rolled up over the hood and halve way up the windshield, I was glad that all that dust wasn't going into my engine!

There's a part of the US called the dust bowl for those reasons.

Pretty much what everyone said.

Here is a video I shot today. No its not much, but water would have gotten in the stock air box. Just that little dip flooded my floors! LOL

Because of my cowl snorkel, I was not worried a bit.

Its just a safety measure, not for submerging.

i prefer the a pillar snorkels over the home made do it yourself cowl versions, cause if you do get a rush of water up the hood to your windshield, it would be like pouring a bucket into your intake.
This!

I wanna do a DIY pillar, with sheet metal, fiberglass or similar. I want it to look good....not PVC pipe cheapo. but also gonna try to do it for under $150 in material cost.

Any links would be cool. I need to search the forum too myself.

My stock intake did fine through Hurricane season. Yes, I did get into the surge waters. Deepest was near Pleasantville outside Atlantic City.

Salt water damage is the biggest worry post storm. You pressure washed your Jeep; over, under, in and out...right!

Some people use the stock air box. thats what I did. And also if you do get a rush of water over the hood, it does not go directly into the air filter. At least not with mine. Its impossible actually when you cowl it on the passenger side.

Mine is kind of hillbilly looking because of the white pvc I used. But its sealed and uses the stock air box. Which is great because if I would ever get any water in it would have to fill the box before it got to the filter.

The passenger side cowl is completely covered(its a fake air dam from factory. The air/water can only come in on the drivers side.

I like how the Safari snorkels look, I had one on my YJ, However the 1 thing I hated was whenever I would go wheeling an a branch grabbed it it would bend back and shoot the scoop off of it then I would have to spend 75 bucks if I could not find it ! If I decide to do a snorkel on the XJ I'll be going with the cowl snorkel .

I bought my pillar snorkel for $120 I think it's been a few years. It's a Chinese copy of an arb one but had lasted this long. All I did was paint it with a good paint to protect it from UV

I have been very happy with my Spectre Performance cowl induction on my XJ. The intake is of course higher than stock and high enough for my needs. It eliminates the airbox, has smooth corners, and takes in colder air than any cold air intake.
