Default Removing a rattle can paint job?

is there anyway to do this? I bought a 98 that has been rattle canned but from what I can tell the original paint is in pretty good shape from where the rattle can paint has begun to peel off. will aircraft stripped be too strong and take both the rattle can and original paint off? just trying to get back to the original paint....

Your best bet will be a wet sand with extremely fine grit sandpaper and then several sessions of buffing. That's about it. Paint stripper will take the original paint off

^agreed you could try lacquer thinner but you'd have to do small spots and don't let it soak in...other than that wet sand it with p2500 grit wet sand paper and remember that there is no such thing as too much water when you wet sand....you may be able to use a combo of both of those because you don't want to sand in tight spots where you can't get a buffer

Reminds me of a Discovery channel show I saw advertised once....

"DUDE, YOU'RE SCREWED"

If you have hopes of returning to the factory paint, stop dreaming. If you want a nice paint job, your only option here is to sand, sand, sand, prime, sand, paint, and clear.

Paint is all prep. Sounds like you have a lot of work ahead.

You're better off just starting from scratch at this point.

MEK from Home Depot or Ace Hardware. Just be sure to clean it up, wash, rubbing compound and wax afterwards.

Honestly, this could work. Spray can paint is usually a crappy lacquer or at best enamel. Neither are very chemically resistant. The basecoat/clearcoat that Chrysler used happens to be very chemically resistant. MEK or a lacquer thinner would more than likely remove the spray paint without harming the original paint.

Now for the bad news. MEK or lacquer thinner will eat through and ruin plastic and rubber like there is no tomorrow. Also, it's not good for you if absorbed through your skin and/or breathed. You would need to wear proper protective clothing. Also, this is going to be a butt ton of work and going to be tricky at best. The realist in me says if you have to ask on an internet forum, you are probably not up for this job.

If it were me, I'd start by stripping it down for prep and then paint it right. But I have years of painting experience and good equipment. I have no idea what you have or what your skill set is.
