Default Red gen light is on!?!

Be got the red gen light on above the check engine light, I've been losing power then it won't start! I charge the battery and it works fine for a week then the losing power issue again, I bought a new battery and no issues for a about 2 weeks then the other night it was loosing power, the radio and head lights were cutting out with bumps on the road. I had to really stomp on the gas to keep it moving and make it home! And there is nothing extra connected to the battery. I thought maybe it was just the harsh winter temps because some days it just wouldn't start if it was too cold, I'm at a loss for words at this point!

Sounds like alternator.

At this point it sounds like only the alternator. But keep running with the fluctuating voltage and bigger problems can develop.
The alt can be tested at a local parts store. I usually buy one rebuilt from NAPA.

That is an important point about bumps and intermittent power loss.
The XJ's are known to have grounding issues.
Here is a great write-up including tips that will likely solve any wiring issues .

Thanks my guess was the alternator but then it stopped and was working normal then it got colder again and it started so I thought it was the battery, but if it will start I'll go get the alternator diagnosed!

They can 'load test' the battery too. Make sure it's still good.

When alternators fail, they don't come back. Leads me to believe there is a wiring/grounding issue.
