Rear suspension options
I just recently got a 97 Cherokee that i plan to build to do some trails here in Colorado. Im not looking for anything crazy just a decently capable trail rig. I was looking at the long arm front kits and i think that is the direction i want to go. My question is is there a down side to running a long arm front and leafs in the rear? Would it be better to go with a short arm front if i plan to keep leafs in the rear. I like the idea of a 4 link rear but if i do it, it would be down the road quite a bit as i can not afford a long arm front and 4 link rear for now.

A long arm kit in the front paired with good leafs in the rear will work perfectly fine. 4 link rear involves a bunch of fabrication work, shock mounts, etc.
I have been very happy with my Synergy long arm kit with RE front coils & rear leafs, Bilstein shocks; 6.25" total lift. On the plus plus side, I could do the install in my driveway.
It has been a durable & reliable setup that I taken all over UT, NM, CO; Moab, Mt Blanca, etc.
Besides the suspension parts, you'll find you need to budget for upgrades to steering, driveshafts, gears, etc, etc.
A moderately built up and capable suspension will be more enjoyable in the long run. You'll have more fun ON the trail instead of broken down OFF the trail.

With my long arm front & leaf rear my Jeep still has good road manners and cruises steadily at 65 - 75.
I wanted to be able throw in the dog & camping gear and drive 300- 400 miles without any highway drama.
