Default Radio mount

Anyone know if a tj radio mount will fit in the side of the dash of the xj. I got a small uhf radio that fits perfect in the side of the dash and was wondering if anyone has done this. Also dose anyone make a mount for between the the sun visors for a radio mount also?

YOu can build one from a piece of flat steel or aluminum from the hardware store. You should be able to use the existing sun visor mounts or if you want to get more indepth there should be areas to attach the factory overhead console that you can put a mount into. I don't know of any overhead moutns off the top of my head that are premade on the market but maybe someone else knows of something. I just mounted my HAM radio to the overhead part for the 95's factory IR based keyless entry system.

I'm having trouble envisioning where this place in "the side of the dash" is at. Or are you saying inside the dash like where the factory radio would go?

That may not be the best idea if you were to be involved in a crash.

He is talking about this:

i seem to remember the TJ dash being slightly narrower than the XJ Dash despite the same design. i could be wrong?

Here's a thread on NAXJA from 7 years ago. No real answer there either.

https://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1071507

Looking at this video and the way it's mounted I'd say it wouldn't fit between the dash and the door when closed. For the 30 dollar buy in price you wouldn't be out too much money if you bought one and determined you couldn't fit it. If you didn't hack it up you could just return it or sell it to a TJ guy.

I've seen this asked a number of times over the years but don't think I have ever seen anyone try it.

I would either make a bracket to go between the visor clips or mount it to the side of the console.
