Thanks for the input Gorilla,
I think I'll try to pick up a set of axles off a four banger, rebuild whatever needs rebuildin' and toss em on.
I think the difference between 32 or 33 will come down to cost.

Damn if he doesn't want the 29 spline 8.25 I might be interested.
I am running 32's with 3.55 gears in my 2k 4.0l auto. it sucks in my opinion. drivable, yes but i don't really like it. i have a set of brand new 33's and don't want to throw them on until i have the axles build with new gears.... but i work with someone who has a TJ 4.0L and a 5 spd with 35's and stock gearing. he doesn't mind it at all.... just preference.
I would get the 33's, no point in buying bigger later to replace a decent set... and then make plans to re-gear. this also opens other doors... upgrade axle now and ditch the D35 (if thats what u have) and maybe a lunch-box locker too.... i know your in CO but I would sell you my 29 Spline 8.25 3.55 axle (would give you the front but its LP and a down grade for you) for 50$ and a 12 pack, once I have my axle swapped. deals are out there.. even for D44's and already re-geared axles...
example- my D44 front with upgraded shafts and 4.56 cost my a total of 180$, the rear 8" Toyota with an e-locker cost me 3 hours of trade work... thats cheaper the re-gearing my stock axles alone.
IMO
31's-ok
32's-manageable
33's-at least 4.10's in the long term.
in short. get the 33's and start saving and looking for deals for gears/axles....
*edit- going from a 31, to a 32 is not a big difference and will leave you wanting more...

If your in the Denver area the u-pull has over 15 xj's in it and I'm sure you could find one with 3.55's but I don't think I remember seeing a 4 cylinder there so no 4.10's
