Spin them too fast to the point where they just sit an spin. Sorry lock up was not a good term, it's just what I was told.

I'm pretty sure you were told wrong. Or misunderstood.

Possibly, can you correct me so I know? Is full time good for snow or what?

One locks the front and rear shafts together fully, so there is no slippage allowed between the front and rear shafts. On dry surfaces this is bad as there is a bit of bind in the drive line. The other allows a bit of slip to allow the drive line to be bind free when dry surfaces are met.

What was the problem?

Motor bogging? Tires spinning and not moving the vehicle?

Yeah basically the tires were spinning. My main issue is stopping on the hills up here and getting going again. It's frustrating having 3 times on dry pavement and 1 wheel on ice and not being able to move. I've tried applying the breaks some to stop the spinning tire but that didn't help my other wheel move.

well, this is where Part Time is better than full time 4wd. In part time, only half the power goes to each axle, so if you had a front tire on ice, but both back tires were on dry pavement, half would go to the rear, where you have traction, and you would move.....

He said "one wheel on ice and the other three on dry pavement and it wouldnt move in full time". if i have a front on ice and both rears have traction, w my np231, it won't just spin one tire and not move. whats confusing?

In 4wd no axle gets full power.

And for it to not spin one back tire it must have a locker/limited slip.

Full time vs part time will not change the fact that you still have an open differential.

Part time vs full time doesn't change much, other than the ability to drive on dry pavement in 4wd...

So can it be agreed upon that my best option is to get some new tires for sure, then get a locking differential?
