I have a 2k and I think the backside of my air box is different than other years and this might be more difficult.

Any ideas on how to over come the small, multi angled front end of this air box?

nah I think it's the same man. I just cut the hole in the top right flat section
Hey Dukie, that's great man. I've never liked the look of the exterior snorkel but still wanted a little bit of flood protection for life here in New Orleans. I've read the whole thread, and maybe I missed it, but I do have one question: did you also waterproof the rest of the engine? I ask because I'm not much of an offroader, but I'm interested in being able to get out of the city should some really terrible flooding happen (again). What else should I do, other than the cowl snorkel?

I did (well..somewhat)
The biggest things are to make sure the vent lines for your distributor, transmission, transfer case, and front/rear differentials are extended high enough so water cannot get into the fluid/electronics.
Also you'll want to get some di-electric grease (any auto parts store) and put some in every electrical connector you can find - particularly the crank sensor and o2 sensor(s) to keep water out.

interior stayed mostly dry (just a little on the floor due to holes in the floor pan). Alternator died later that day due to mud. Water doesn't affect the alternator permanently, or you wouldn't be able to drive in the rain lol.

Rain is much different then submerging your alt in a river. I've killed a couple alternators from creek crossings. I found the way to go is go to oreilly or autozone and pony up the extra 15$ for the lifetime warranty. I'm on my third replacement
