Dukie, with drain holes at the bottom of the air box left open wouldn't this allow water from a high river crossing to come up through the drain holes and get water in the air box?

If this is true any thoughts on a flapper valve to let water out but not in?

good god i hope you're not in the water that deep for long enough for that to happen. The holes aren't very big. It's a good suggestion though (although i don't think there would be enough pressure to open the valve to get water out, especially with the engine running).

I've considered just sealing the drain holes up completely. From what i've seen water never makes it into the airbox from the cowl anyways, to the holes may be hurting more than they are helping.

I'm open to alternative suggestions to test out

Plug them with something (rubber plug, chunk of pencil) and run it for a month then see if you develope any issues. I dont think it would be a problem not haveing holes. The little bit of water that does get in would just evoporate.

i haven't really put much thought into the needing to plug the holes since i don't intend on ever doing any extended river crossings with my rig like....ever....but it's a good point for someone who may

See, you don't plan for it, but here's what happened to me. I drove into a puddle that turned out to be deeper than I thought. With my ATs I got stuck. The guy trying to pull me out stalled his Wrongler so there I sat as water poured into the XJ. I sat there for a good 20 minutes & took on 3' to 4' water. My point is, you don't have to plan for it to be prepared for it.

Have fun out there ...
