Default motor swap issues please help

I just purchased a 96 cherokee, the previous owner said that he had put a 4.6l stroker in it. The truck runs and drives great...tons of power shifts fine but i cant get the truck inspected. When it gets plugged in it reads error code 66 mani. specific code. So i took the truck to a dealership, the dealership is telling me that the pcm and tcm cannot communicate because the enigne and pcm are from a 98 and the tranny and tcm are from a 96. Can this be solved by getting a tcm from a 98 or can the pcm be programed to recognize the 96 tcm? Very confused here and dont want to pay a dealership almost 1k to go chase the wiring harnesses to find the problem and the only other option they gave me was taking the motor out and replacing it with a year correct 4.0.

Welcome to CF. As far as I know, the '98 TCM won't work because they were changed in '97. Someone may offer more knowledge, better advice to help here.

I dont believe that it will work out with the newer TCM, but you could always search craigslist for a 97+ tranny cheap and throw that in there. Goodluck, and enjoy the stroker.

TCM in a 96 should be in behind (well, in front of I guess ) the lower dash panel/knee panel, on the passenger side.
