The unit bearing assembly (hub) will hold for a little while until it comes apart.... then you are really screwed.

running without the stub shaft will make the hub come apart.

Well I'd love to find a set of used lockers from someone who upgraded. But I'd like to keep it under 400. I paid 1200 for it and all it had was a small lift. They seem to be money pits lol. Damn fun ones!

How do you figure? The stub shaft just has splines that mate with the hub, washer, nut... that just hold the splines in the hub! I sure you it won't come apart without the stub shaft!

The only thing that holds the inner bearing in is the stub shaft. Running without one is dangerous. The unit bearing WILL come apart without the outer stub shaft installed.

Proof

I stand corrected! I have never heard that, I'll be taking a closer look at my hub next time its apart to seehow that could fail! Thanks

Guess I'll be tossing a stub shaft in the parts box too...

The stub does hold the bearing together. I just replaced one on the 98 ZJ . Just pull the whole assembly and pop out the U-joint. If you have CV joints you should have upgraded!
