I have a 94 XJ. the previous owner stated it had a unknown brand front locker. I dont know if he is mistaking as it is what he was told also from another owner.

How can I tell, I have driven it both on and off road and cant tell. What can I do to check or test it without pulling the cover off. When driving I cant see the wheels and not know what it should feel like from behind the wheel.

I have a rear likerite locker in another vehicle and can feel it back there when it locks or unlocks during tight turns, however what should it feel like if it is installed in the front.

If you're feeling lazy put the t-case in neutral, jack one of the front tires off the ground. Spin the wheel by hand. If you hear ratcheting then you have a locker(assuming it's a lunchbox locker). If you don't then you don't...

My favorite is to jack all 4 wheels off the ground, put it in 4 wheel drive, have a friend hold on to one of the front wheels. Push the gas. Then hit the brake, put it in park, cut it off, get out and look.

If the friend is laying on the ground bleeding then you have a locker.

If your friend is sitting there looking at you confused then you don't have a locker.

 

Great time to change the gear oil and make sure every thing is ok. While your there take a few pics and we can tell you for sure

or just try to climb a steep hill and count the holes your tires made when you lose traction

 

I can hear mine racheting click, click, click, when I turn real sharp on pavement. You'd know if it did.

 

Great idea. Change all the fluids if you just got it. How do you know if the diffs, transfer case etc aren't full of water?

Heck of a thing to find out on the trail or the freeway..........

Just make sure it's a friend that's not mechanically inclined... chances are that's the last time he helps you with your rig!
