Hi
I have a jeep xj 1999 2wd which I have for around 10 years. I want to convert my 2wd to 4x4, but I don't have the idea which parts would I need like the diffs and the transfer case and the other parts which would make my rig off road capable.
Help me in this regard.

Thanks for the reply actually I needed to know which diffs and transfer case will be the best to be used.
My jeep is in good shape that's the reason I don't want to ditch it.

Your profile says an AX15, so I would recommend a 1994 or newer to keep the external clutch cylinder setup. For diffs, you probably have stock 3.07:1 gears. So either look for another 4.0l manual donor, or swap both axles at the same time to regear - most common ratio was 3.55 gearing from a 4.0l automatic. All of the Cherokees used the same front axle, a Dana30. The front wheel bearing hub and brake hardware changed in 1996. It will still bolt up just fine, you just need to remember which year it came from for ordering parts (or swap the hubs, rotors, caliper all at the same time). They also switched to the low pinion version in 2000 (should still work I think, just longer driveshaft). Four different rear diffs were available. If you have ABS, you'll need the Dana35 setup for ABS.

So all that said, a 1996-1999 donor would be the best option.

True, but if you're swapping the whole axle, it's not really a big deal aside from remembering what year to order parts for.

The best way to remember is to write notes in the back of the owner's manual. That way when you sell it, the next guy will know as well. You can find manuals in the gloveboxes of junkyard cars.
Ended up writing my own additional Service manual following a custom A/C installation, and some other modifications, operation & electrical, 30+ pages, (not a Jeep)
