Default hood vents...

Ive been thinking abt putting some smaller Hood vents on my xj but just wondering is there any big ups or Downs abt them? And do they actually help temp wise? My xjs never over heated on me but would like if I could help the heat escape anyways. Any ideas would be awesome!

You don't even need vents. Just get a hammer and a punch and knock some holes in the hood. Or take the hood off and shoot some holes through it with a gun.

Hood vents won't reduce coolant temp, but it'll help keep under hood temps down which allows all the rubber parts to last longer, cooler is always good.

Not 100% true my temp gauge runs 15* cooler while wheeling all day in the desert in the summer then it did before I installed the vents.

They let more air go through the radiator because there is some place for the air to go basically after it comes through.

I noticed a 5 to 10 degree drop in average coolant temps after I added vents with no other changes.

I like this idea.

Here's the vents I plan on getting. I plan on also fastening some sort of removable screen underneath of them to catch debris.

It definitely gets hot as hell under there and allowing the hot air to escape will definitely keep your engine running somewhat cooler.

If hood vents didn't work, why did Chrysler put them on the hoods of the 1998 Grand Cherokee with the 5.9?

I saw a 5-10* drop in mine. The vents allow the hot air around the engine a better escape and a little more air to pass through the radiator so you should a small drop. The biggest benefit though is getting al that hot air out of the engine bay. Here are mine...

No I own a company that makes aluminum dampers for industrial fans that get mounted to a wall of a building. I just made a real small one and added the thermal actuator. I'm in a wierd spot because I cant talk people tru making it due to the fact we make our dampers for HVAC and not for cars and trucks. http://www.kmdampers.com/Page_7_3500.pdf My son is a welder and works for Hyline in Perkasie pa. They make jeep parts maybe I should get together with them and manufacture them on a bigger scale. Do you think they would sell?
I only did it for mine because of heat soak issues. Hyline has hood vents but they are always open so I jipped up my own version.

I think you meant to reply to the other hood vent thread, Paul.
