When AMC came out with the Xj platform in 85-86 there was a 2.8 V6 model Cherokee. When Chrysler took over production, they canned the little V6 and kept the I-4 (go figure) the new 4.0 was now the go to engine used in the Xj.

Chryco took over AMC in late 88 so the 87 and 88 are still AMC and they use the 4.0

I still have a pic of mine when I first got her. They were the Wagoneer Cherokees. The ones with the 4 head lights. I'll dig it up when I get home.

Official deals were made in 86 but yes, Official takeover occoured in 88. Remember cars are made one year prior to their release. They finished their model runs before takeover.

easiest way to tell is the 8.25 has a flat bottom on the axle. the two diff covers look very similar. so unless you know what to look for, you will be confused.
