It can be done that way, but it's risky given that the headlight switches fail with stock bulbs and wiring.

This post comes at the perfect time,as I have long neglected my poor old lights. I have read the post on your renix refresh page many times ,and have done many of the procedures. After doing some searching, is it the Putco harness kit that would work hand in hand with the above mentioned(autopal) kit? Might as well upgrade it all in one shot,no doubt? Any chance you have a link/part no. to the correct wiring harness as there are so many out there?

Indeed. I should point out my wiring was in good condition and maintained. Poor connections/grounding etc creates excessive load/resistance which generates heat and causes components to fail. I know you know this cruiser. Also worn wiring and direct shorts can be catastrophic. I dont think the 60/55s draw much more than sealed beams and work with good existing wiring. Anything higher and you need to do the harness and for best results use the harness with any wattage.

Use dielectric grease to seal connections goes a long way. Checking periodically is always recommended like anything else.

I know. I just wanted to reiterate the importance of the harness.
