I'm assuming the 02 is a grand cherokee because the cherokee stopped production in 2001.

Nope. The WJ has a different mounting layout as well as a different bolt pattern.

Try 91-01.
A hp axle will bolt right in.

wat.

Front Axle
1984–1996: Dana 30, High Pinion, Reverse Cut, 27-spline axleshafts (1989 – 1995 : with ABS used 5-297x universal joints, non-ABS had 5-260x universal joints. Certain XJ models were produced with constant-velocity joints instead of universal joints.)
1996–1999: Dana 30, High Pinion, Reverse Cut, 297x/760 universal joint, 27-spline axleshafts.
2000–2001: Dana 30, Low Pinion, Standard Cut, 297x/760 universal joint, 27-spline axleshafts.

Most avoid the 84-90 due to the CAD. I'd look for a 96-99 because of the bigger joints and because it's high pinion. I know when I swapped to HP on my ZJ I had a lift on it otherwise the drive shaft wouldn't have cleared but I don't think that's an issue with the 00-01 XJs since they are basically the same as the 97-99 models.

And I told him 00-01 is low pinion.

And technically that was from wiki.

Technically any xj axle will bolt in. Yes most people avoid the CAD system but its really not hard to just shim the fork on the older axles(not a strong but doable). 96-99 are the best though if you have a chance to be picky.
