The vehicle is an 01 XJ. Major options from Toledo are towing package and Up Country package. I got in the XJ the other day and when I went to pull the steering wheel down to driving position all I got was a snapping noise and nothing moved except now the control lever just flops back and forth with no tension. How much is fixing this going to set me back with my favorite mechanic? Thanks much.

 

See if you can look underneath the column. The lever attaches to a shaft/rod that unlocks the tilt. See if the rod is still there and the lever end, where the rod attaches hasn't broken off. You can find used columns on eBay.
