Default np242 swap to np231 ?

im thinking about swapping my np242 to np231 just becouse of aftermarket support of sye. im in the procces of lifting my jeep and this is next on the to do list. if its a good idea how easy is it to do as far as spline counts on the drive lines being different maybe or linkages? or if not worth the hastle good sye recommendations for the np242?

87-89/early90 = 21-spl, 91+ 23-spl. I believe after 95 they had an additional sensor or something. Basically, it is plug 'n pray.

I just installed a h&t on my 242 - install was very pretty simple even for a mechanical idiot like me - i got it from Dusty's Offroad or something similar. It worked like a charm. I'll have to look at the box to find out exactly where I got it from tho... Frank from Serious Offroad originally gave me the info on this. The other route you can go is you can get a setup from Tom Woods but that was quite a bit more expensive...

I just did this swap a month ago. I have a 1991 Cherokee Laredo that came with a np242 transfer case. I swapped in a np231 TC with a advance adapter SYE on it. You may need to change the input gear, which you can determine at the website of novak conversions. They are great to work with and will have all the parts you need, if you need any. When installing a new (used) transfer case it's a very good idea to open it up and make sure everything is in good shape while it's out of the jeep. And while it's open you mine as well install the AA SYE kit . You'll be glad you did!!

One last thing, you'll need to have the linkage bar lengthened or shortened and also get the np231 shifter handle guide, since you'll now have different shift positions.

No thats right. 21 spline is 90 and down. 23 is 91+. I have put the 3rd 21 spline in my jeep this spring.

The 231 linkage is shorter then the 242 for sure though. Just pull linkage off what ever xj you pull parts from.
