Default Exhaust header choices 99+ intake

I have read that the 99+ intake limits what kind of exhaust headers can be used.

I have an '87 Comanche with a 4.7L '96 block and head motor with a '99+ intake going in. I am using the Renix system.

Question, what brand of header will work with this setup and are there any you can buy without modifications? What ones are better than others, which should I avoid?

Thanks!!

You should be able to use any of them, just have to do a little bit of grinding.

^Yep

And I'll throw in that you want to avoid Pacesetter. I'd go for this, cheap and a quality product:

This guy, who started this thread, BrofessorXJ, has fit a 99 intake manifold with an APN header (which will be the same fitment as many other headers). He can give you direction if you have questions on the fitment of it.

I went with the APN and 99+ intake... Little grinding on the runners and it was good to go. Can't speak for the fitment on a 4.7L, but my 98 4.0 loves the combination.

Any pics on the grinding? I would rather not grind on a new part if it's possible, so what one should I go with? Spend $170 or $430? It is not seen so I don't care about stainless I just want it reliable so it doesn't blow gaskets.

I don't have any pics on grinding. But I hate to say that you're gunna either have to grind the new exhaust manifold so it fits with the 99 intake OR you can go the route that I would not suggest and find an older style intake manifold (from 91-98 I believe) to go with a new exhaust manifold. That would bolt right up but you'd lose some power. And you'd have to mess with some vacuum lines and wiring. I'd say that it'd be much easier on your part to just grind a tad and keep the newer intake and the added power that that brings. But hey, it's your rig.

I've read this often about grinding the header to make it fit... I didn't have any issues with my Banks. I know it's expensive (I bought it back when I was making good money), but it bolted up to a 7120 head with a 99+ intake in a '97 XJ- no modifications necessary.

I should have said this... I did not have to grind the header, had to grind the manifold. It was literally about 1/16" off of the 5&6 runners.

I just ordered the Rugged Ridge header. I didn't think about it not fitting with the 99+ intake. I've got a 91, but have 99 intake, and 703 injectors that I was going to put on at the same time. Header will be here monday, I'll let you guys know if it fits.

Alright, so my header came in yesterday. It looks decent, quality could be better but I don't really have anything to compare it to other than a $700 turbo manifold I purchased for another vehicle a few years back. Here are a couple pics of it out of the box:

I was excited to put it on and see if it would fit with the 99 intake manifold. I put it on to test fit without the gasket, tighted the two nuts on the ends down to hold it in place. Header fits good. Grab the 99 intake, try to put it on, won't fit. Grab my 91 intake, it also does not fit. WTF! Here are two pics with the spot the intake hits outlined in red:

I could grind probably 1/8 inch off of both spots and it would fit. But I should have to modify it to fit a 91 intake.

Not a big deal. However, I would think the stock manifold should at least fit with a brand new header.

Unless you bought direct from Jeep I would have no expectations of the sort...
