I know this is posted as a sticky thread, but just wanted to be sure before I start pulling engines.
I have an 01 XJ. A friend of mine has a 94 Grand Cherokee and a 99 Grand Cherokee that his willing to give me an engine out of. From my understanding: The 94 will fit into the Xj but the 99 will not? Or am I SOL in both situations.
Thank you!

The '94 Grand Cherokee has the 4.0L HO engine, which will fit your '01 XJ with some minor adjustments like swapping your intake/exhaust manifolds and sensors. The '99 Grand Cherokee engine won't work it's a different design V8 or 4.7L, not compatible. So, the '94 engine is your best bet.

I appreciate the info, thank you. I’m going to start pulling my engine today
Does anyone have any more info on this process? I pulled the Zj engine, and it is obviousy the same exact engine, but as Roberto said, several things are different, including the ECU. Is there a writeup for swapping everything? Do I have to swap out the entire wiring harness? thanks!

I dont have a write to share bur i can tell you to essentially reserve everything from your XJ besides the block, head and oil pan. Originally Posted by mattheww97

You are going to remove everything off your bad engine and mount it to your "new" engine.
Motor mounts, manifolds, felt plate, distributor pickup. Several things are cross compatible but for sake of simple explanation - re-use everything from your old engine
