Default 98 vs 94

Good morning/evening,

I have a1998 4.0L straight 6 from a 1998 jeep Cherokee, I want to know if it would fit in a 1994 jeep cherokee that has the same type of engine? I know this might be a silly question but this is my first attempt at a engine swap.

Thank you

Welcome to the forum.

The '93-'95 are the first generation ZJ, with OBD I engine controller.

The '96-'98 are second generation ZJ with OBD II engine controller.

Even if it fit, the electrical interfaces will probably be different.

Yes it's a direct swap, may have to switch over a few accessories or sensors but that's not a big deal.

Are you talking about a Cherokee? Or a Grand Cherokee? They are not the same vehicle, and you are posting in the Grand Cherokee section. If you have a Grand Cherokee, say so. Don't call it a Cherokee. It's not a Cherokee.

There is a sticky at the top of the Cherokee forum that lays out which engines will swap.

I agree but in this case it doesn't really matter. 94 and 98 ZJ and XJ 4.0 engines will all interchange.

It always matters that we speak clearly and correctly. Confusion helps nobody.
