1997 XJ Sport. Purchased two 14" (2,000 cfm each, 25 amp) electric fans w/ hardware ($60 on Amazon). Replaced OEM electric fan with one, comes on at 220F (verified with scanner and manual). I took off the engine accessory fan to replace it with the other electric fan.
Question: Should I just splice that fan into the other one to have them both come on at 220F or should I just run the fan into the ignition and it run when all of the time? Or would both fans running tax the OEM 90 amp alternator (no lights, winch, or high $$$ stereo installed)?
I will be "deleting" my A/C soon (never used it in 13 years) and putting the alternator in it's place.

The fact that the secondary fan comes on at 220 or when the a/c is on is for extra help when the motor starts to get really hot, you definitly want to have your main fan come on before that, I personally wouldn't want it to run constantly, for a few reasons, to extend the life of the fan and alt, plus it will take longer to warm up, (which may not be a concern of yours living in FL) and you probably wont need it to run much during highway driving. But anyway, they sell a kit for what you're doing, it comes with all the wiring for the fan and a sensor that you usually put in the fins of the radiator somewhere and will turn on the fan when the engine gets to a temperature you choose if you get an adjustable one, or at a predetermined temperature if you go with a cheaper one. Heres an example of what I'm talking about, this is one of the nicer ones. Good Luck

I think I'll go with that Painless adjustable switch and play from there. The 2000 CFM fan ($19 single w/o relay and hardware) blows pretty hard. I never really noticed the air flow of the OEM fan. Refer to: Dino's http://www.angelfire.com/my/fan/electric.html for more info. I think a higher amp alternator is in my future anyway.

I have a quick? I just did a fan up grade and im running to XJ fans now. I have one on a switch and the other works off the sensor. What temp does the other one come on at. I know you need the air on but mine doesn't seem to come on. I thought it supposed to come on at 190 degrees? I have a 97

It should come on when the whenever the A/C is switched on OR when temp hits about 220

That's correct, sounds like you have a problem, depending on where you live if the other fan isnt coming on when the a/c is on, you are probably gonna have a overheating problem when its warmer outside if not already

There must be someway to test the sensor, fuse looks good, and I think there's a relay connected to this too.maybe it the relay? Is there another fuse under the dash also? I found a big 40 fuse under the hood but that looks fine.

the OEM clutch fan is supposed to pull about 2000-3000CFM. So you want to get an electric fan that pulls just as much. I would not wire two fans through that single wire source, it will pull too many amps and burn something out. You'll want to get a wiring kit that will turn the fan on sooner than 220F and turn off lower than that as well.
I thought about going with an electric fan, it can come in handy with long trips on the highway but I didn't want to put more draw on the alternator as it is, so I changed the clutch fan to the ZJ instead which works well.

yes there's a relay under the hood too, in that same fuse box. Just take it out and jump it, and if the fan runs, you know thats your problem. If the fan doesn't run, try unplugging it and putting power directly to it, if it still doesn't run, u got a bad fan. I don't think theres another fuse inside for the fan.
I got the Painless adjustable temp switch installed and wired a toggle switch into the cab. I love it. The switch dosen't have any "numbers" on the settings. I just turned all the way down and hit the cab switch when I feel like it.

Is this true for a 2001 also. I just bought one and when I tested the fan it only comes on when temp is at 220 with or without the ac running.Originally Posted by adamski66
