I think you should throw it back at him. Go to the junk yard and buy a low milage 4.0 to replace yours. To hell with a 350. You'll have WAY more than 400 bucks in it if you put it in your XJ.

I did it. If you plan and search parts it falls together. Mine isn't a money pit, might have $1500.00 in it as it sits. Waiting on funds for a couple things, larger dollar things. Check my sig.

How is a motor with half the torque and 100 less hp going to pull anything around?
I'm a sbc guy myself, but it has its place and in an xj isn't its place, but I'd by no means call the 4.0 a better motor, or claim that it could pull around a 350.
If you were swapping a 350, you'd obviously atleast have a cam and intake considering a performer intake can be had used for like 30 bucks.
So it would be easy to make close to 300 hp and close to 400 ft/lb torque.
So again tell me how a 4.0 is going to pull anything but a hamstring trying to play with the big boys?
I love my 4.0 but its not in the same league as a 350, hell not even the same sport.

350 is a great motor, but... $400? What's done to it? You can buy stock 350's all day long for $200. Sooooo many of them were made, there is no shortage of them.

I've been kicking this idea around for a while now too, I think I'm gonna stiffen up the Unibody first though. Also I really want to keep fuel injection so that has to be assessed as well. I say do it, and see where it takes you.
