have you ever installed a pinion seal before?

if you don't tap it in with equal pressure all around it, it will be tough to get in and one side will keep popping out as you tap the other side.

No I have not, but I tapped the old one back in to see what it would be like and it was much easier to get in. Still snug, yet much easier to get in.

Usually, I use a socket or an old piece of 2x4 lumber to evenly distribute the blows from the hammer to get a pinion seal installed.

of course an old seal will go in easier, it has already been "crushed" that tiny amount to seat firmly and is probably covered in residual gear oil.

I can't make any assumptions without actually being there, but i'm willing to bet you have the right seal.

How do you do that if the pinion shaft is sticking out? If it wasn't I'd just put a square piece if 2x4 on the seal and hit it.

Thats great news! I'd love for it to be the right one, but I was reasonably sure it didn't fit before. It was off by like 15 on the micrometer from the old removed seal. Is that a reasonable amount to "crush"?

i have some big old sockets i use. pieces of tubing can work well too. a 2x4 will be more even than a hammer head, but only get about 1/4 of the seal at a time with the pinion shaft sticking out.

Just drill out the center of the 2x4 so it clears the pinion, no problem to hammer it in then.

15 thousandths of an inch?

That should be no issue. not sure what kind of seal you have, but some are painted on the outside and the paint will rub off when installing, and others have some rubber that squishes a bit on the outside.

Im not sure exactly because the guy at Napa was the one who measured it. But I'd say it looks to me like its 1-3millimeters larger than the previous one
