Default Curious about something an old mechianic told me

Was I talkin to this guy at car quest who was apparently a jeep fan, and after talking about my low gas mileage(last time I did the math it was 8.5! I do a lot of beach crusing) he suggested that I go out and buy some acetone (PURE!) and dump about half a gallon into u tank along with at least ten gallons of gas to clean the system out reall good.
Anyone ever heard of this?

I have heard of using acetone as a mileage booster. It is supposed to make the gasoline vaporize better. But the ratio of acetone to gas is much less, more like 4 oz. per 10 gallons of gas. I tried it for awhile, and didn't notice any difference.

i am unsure of acetone but in a related topic. adding tolulene(speeling may be off) to gas to add octane. ive heard of old drag racers doing this in a 1third tolulene to 2 thirds 92 octane gas. i think the only thing acetone would do is pull water out of the gas . id google it tho and see.

Mythbusters tried the acetone thing, it actually burned more gas. I would not recommend anything like that in a 96 or newer vehicle. The potential for ruining something is high.

Seafoam works great esp when used as directed. Ive used it many times on several different rides ive had and never had an issue. Personally i love the stuff and would recomend it to anyone. Its great for removing sludge buildup in your engine. Pour in 1/3 of a bottle in Your engine oil about 250 miles before your oil change. Then pour 1/3 in a full tank of gas (i did it on half a tank). Lastly the remaining 1/3 goes in your brake booster tube. Awesome stuff after 3 treatments over three oil changes, by the time i was ready for my last change my oil still looked new and my jeep had 165k miles atthe time
