After hearing about how to build a Heavy Duty 231 t-case using parts from a dodge and chevy t-case I did some research. Figured a t-case upgrade wouldn't be a bad idea... Even though the 231J is pretty reliable, I'm running 36's and figure a little more security wouldn't hurt.
The typical ingredients for this build include:
231C/233C from a chevy S10/blazer (for the wider chain)
231D from a dodge Ramp pickup (for the 6pt planetary gear set)
Just for reference...
--------Chain width--------planetary
--231J-------1"---------------3pt
--233C------1.25"------------4pt
--231D------_____------------6pt
So with that stated.... lets the pictures begin!
I picked up a 233C off a local forum (GL4x4) for only $40, it was pulled from a 93...

Case split open

Chain and chain ring from the inner side of the output shaft, also the the front axle output shaft comes with

i had already pulled the 6pt planetary (on right) from a buddies scrap t-case from his Dodge...... You have to swap the planetary from input shaft to input shaft.. the Dodge input shaft is a bit longer than the Jeeps are.

Next came the donor t-case (pulled it from a 2001 XJ).

231J case split open with the shafts and chain removed.

233C chain and etc on top, 231J chain and etc on bottom... Noticable difference.

the 233C's chain ring has needle roller bearings (on right) while the 231J does not (on left).... so they have to be removed before you can install the wider chain ring.

then completely re-assemble and seal up!

as far as your SYE. I don't know.... an SYE kit will work with this HD setup ( this setup uses all your original parts also... in this HD setup your mearly just swapping individual parts.) but i dont know what SYE kit you have and what tcase you are running...The only reason i haven't installed an SYE with my t-case is because my MJ has a longer d-shaft than the normal XJ's and i haven't had any binding issues.
