Per the powertrax installation guide, you are. I think different manufacturers have different requirements.

If by shims you are referring to the thrust washers, the Spartan locker is the only one I know of that doesn't use the thrust washers, the lock right and Aussie do use the factory thrust washers.

I looked it up, and they're not supposed to be reused in the 8.25 (the powertrax Locker I had put in my jeep) but are in the d30, and I helped a friend with his d30 and his instructions said not to reuse them, but I don't remember what Locker it was

One of the question responses says it's just for toyota trucks, but another says it's good for a dana 30, but neither is the actual seller answering.

The Thrust Washers are used. Even thicker thrust washers may need to be used if the tolerance (gap between installed locker cam gears) is not within specifications.
