Antenna Fender Mount?
As a FF I keep a scanner in my car and I have seen some VHF and Lowband antennas mounted on the fender position directly opposite the radio antenna. Anyone know of a mount that is for our jeeps that is what I described? Thanks, Rob.

From one brother to another brother. Don't do fender mounts. It creates a bad ground for your antenna, basically making it useless. Ever use your portable in an engine? The vehicle grounds out antennas. Attach it to the roof for better RX. You could do a simple K12 magnet mount with an antenna tuned for lowband, VHF. Find a local Hammy store in your area.

Gotsnowboards seems to have a bit more knowledge in the subject but I'll share what I know as well; the antenna ends up using the vehicle as a reflector/ dish and with the fender set ups you'll always have a stronger signal from the rear and vice versa with the rear mount. Given with good swr tuning it shouldn't be that big of a deal, it's something to consider. Also, I love supporting guys here on the forum and brands that we all know and love but if you need an antenna mount id highly advise just fabbing your own.

Another thing I don't agree with is the magnetic antenna. Antenna height tuning is imperative for good reception. The only real disadvantage to what he wants is that it's offset to the center of the vehicle. As said above, the ground plane is established by the highest planar surface and so it's said to be better if you give the antenna a prominent 360* surface to reflect off of.
I can say that with good SWR tunning, again said here already, you can get excellent reception from a side-mount.
I'm currently using the Firestick hood channel mount and love it.

vhf/uhf...hell anything 50mhz and up is pretty much line of sight, that's why when you tuck it inside the engine you lose your rx.
You'll do fine with a fender mount although yes a roof mount could possibly render better results depending on your surroundings. being a scanner w/o tx capabilities you you don't need to worry about ground plane
ground yes, ground plane no...two completely different things
