Hey guys I'm gettin ready to install my new Performance curve tail pipe and muffler this weekend. I'm also doing a new Cat. My current exhaust system is not stock.. it appears to be custom mandrel bent down/S pipe up to the current (bad) cat converter. My question is this... From my down pipe as it crosses under the center (bell housing) there is a barrel looking thing... The down pipe appears to be 2 or 2.25" going into the barrel and comes out at 2.5" on the other side of the barrel. I don't know what this barrel is??? I've read allot about putting flex joints on these XJ exhaust systems... Should I cut and replace barrel thing with a piece of flex pipe??

So my lovely momma dukes got me a flowmaster super 44 muffler for christmas...but it's a 2.5in/2.5 dual out... how difficult will it be for me to run the second pipe around the gas tank without too much bend to affect performance??

OR you could sell that super 44 and buy one from MUDFROG (vender on here) on his website www.performance-curve.com. That way you can get one with the correct inlet/outlet you need. He sells them for only $60 plus free shipping and you can enter the cupon code CHEROKEEFORUM and get an additional 5% off your order. Just a thought.

I do know for a fact that it being there has nothing to do with being a California model XJ. All of my XJ's have had that bulge in the exhaust and personally I believe its just for resonation. If your replacing the pipe anyway just cut it right before it and look inside to see if it has any cat material inside of it. If its just hollow run it strait piped. All Cherokee's come with that piping from the factory.

If this looks like too tight of a fit to you then you can always cap and weld one outlet.

Its possible though. Pacestter with an X pipe with an O2 bung in it. I'd just hate to be the poor guy to work it out.

Right - I've got a regular Cat but I was wondering what this bulge was on the S pipe... could be a pre-cat or resonator.
Now that's what I was wanting to know! If all your XJ's have had the bulge then I know it's normal. As for whether it's a pre-cat or resonator.. like you say I guess there's only one way to find out!! ..... Thanks!
