My clean '01 has 123k on the clock and is finally due for an exhaust system. Everything up to the cat is fine, so I'm just looking to do a cat back system. So many to choose from. I'm not too worried about cost, but I don't want to spend $600+ on parts if I'm not going to notice the difference when spending $300 on parts. I do a bit of towing, nothing too heavy. I want something that sounds a bit healthier than OEM, but I don't want a major freeway drone fest, ya know?

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

I've had this system on for around 4yrs now. I substituted lap joint band clamps(no welding) for the ones with the kit. It's a turbo muffler(#91 IMCO)but not overly loud at all.

Thanks. The more I thought about it, the more I wanted a stainless steel system, so I ordered the Banks system for $280 shipped. From reading the reviews on it, compared to the reviews on 4 or 5 different aluminized systems priced at $120-170ish, it sure looked like folks who spent the extra dough on the Banks were very happy with it. Lots of similar positive comments about fitment, quality, and the right amount of sound and performance I was looking for. We'll see after mine arrives later this week.

I have a very short (2 mile) commute to work, so I know it's hell on my exhaust, as I don't get it warmed up enough to dry up all the condensation inside 5 days a week. Stainless will hold up to the acidity left behind better than the cheaper alternatives.

This thread has "sound samples" of what different exhausts sound like on it.

Hi there,

Someone stole the catalytic converter off of my XJ. Luckily it looks like they left the O2 sensor. I wont be able to get a new cat for about a week or two and was wondering how bad of an idea it would be to put put a pipe over this section so that I can lightly drive it.

What issues would this cause? Would there be a significant lack of back-pressure? Would it run too rich?

Thanks in advance.

Missing Cat
Technically speaking this topic isn't allowed per forum rules, physically the Cherokee will be fine by just putting a pipe over it, it make make the check engine light come on, but won't cause issues running.

Thanks for your reply! Happy to hear that it will be able to get me from A to B while I wait for the part.

Sorry! I didn't give it much thought but I now see how this would be sort of against rule No. 5 of the forum rules

Notwithstanding why I would do this, BUT - is there enough room between the downpipe and muffler to run 2 cats in series?

Not really. There's barely enough room on the downpipe to run a 6" long flex joint.

You want to build a complete one from scratch or install a new complete system? Building one from scratch, well.... basically just requires skill and the correct tools. You won't get a TON of torque out of an exhaust system on a stock 4.0 liter though, but to get the most out of it, go with an aftermarket header, 2.5" pipe throughout the system, a hi-flow (non-restrictive) catalytic converter, and your muffler of choice. The key thing though is opening up the restriction. The 2.5" pipe is perfect for that especially when combined with the aftermarket header. The exhaust pulse of the stock manifold is a little restricting in itself.

Combining the exhaust system with a overbored throttle body (about 62mm) will also help. All of these mods though will only net you about 10-15 ft/lbs if that.

Lightbulb '95 4.0 exhaust system overhaul..

So here is my posting:

Finally without fail, my Cherokee's factory manifold suffered a complete crack around the base of the collector right before it bolts to the downpipe and it's time to get it replaced as well as all the other modifications in line with it. I have ordered a ceramic header (not Ebay), Free flow 2.5" exhaust, and High flow cat with new O2's but my question is this..

The Downpipe has this type of crimp on 3 sides where it bolts to the manifold flange at the base. I initially thought someone bent it or it was modded this way for clearance. I looked my online parts catalogs and there happens to be 3 types listed available for replacement.

1: stock type with the 3 indentations
2: one completely smooth without that crimp bend
3: does not apply. It's a 2 piece inlet downpipe

Does that obstruction do anything or is it a problem? Please let me know s I can order either and complete it.

Thanks guys..

It's originally "indented" for driveshaft clearance. The smooth one would be for a 2wd application (no driveshaft).

As far as performance goes, I really don't think the dents are going to make a huge difference, TBH. The major "restricting" factor is that the downpipe is 2.25".... so it almost acts as a "choke" between your header collector and 2.5" pipe from the downpipe back.
