If you do it right it's awesome and sounds really good. I had a pacesetter header, thunderbolt metallic core cat, 2.5" pipe all the way, and a 4x18" tip. Idling it sounded just like a cummins, but then became similar to a V8. My 4.0 had been mistaken as a V8 a couple times, but you could tell it wasn't. Very similar though

I loved it and miss it, but it did get the attention of the police...

Everyone has their own tastes, I personally love my exhaust with a little straight piping.
No muffler, performance cat, 2.25" flared out to 2.5" to the rear, I think it beats the hell out of any OEM set up. The cabin drone can be a little loud for people in the back seat, and a little up front, but personally, I LOVE being able to hear my exhaust inside! You get used to it anyway, I don't notice it anymore. I get annoyed riding in other cars where I DON'T have any cabin drone.
But really, everyone has their own preferences and thoughts on what sounds good. I definitely advocate no muffler and a cat, I like it. It only cost me 60 bucks to get rid of the muffler and just straight pipe that section. My cat was only around 250 bucks. But you just have to try some things and find what you think sounds best.

(To keep it XJ specific), let's say somebody decided to swap a V8 into an XJ.. Specifically, an AMC 360. If said person wanted to run true dual exhaust, with 2 thrush glasspacks and have it exit right behind the driver door, 2.5 inch the whole way would be the way to go, right? I like the 2.5 I have on the XJ, but I don't want to go TOO big..

Also, something to consider.. if you're removing your carpet, the interior drone of the exhaust is going to be considerably louder.

I replaced all my hangers and clamps too, forgot about that. But my point was just that getting rid of the muffler and straight piping there is a hell of a lot cheaper than any muffler and a little better sound, in my opinion at least.
What's a good quiet muffler, preferably cheap. I don't think I want the piping just the muffler and I'll throw a elbow on and dump.toward side (rattles hitting shackles). Stainless would be cool too but not necessary. What's with making them loud that's all I saw scrolling through here....retarded
